Our Mission and Purpose
The RH Initiative was born from the gritty realities of our city streets. Our founders grew up right here in Oakland, facing the same daunting challenges as the people we now serve - sky-high rents, scarce job prospects, and the heavy stigma that comes with a criminal record. So they understand how tough it can be to find stability.
That personal connection fuels our passion. Our work is grounded in empathy and the belief that everyone deserves a real shot at a better life. We're committed to making a difference, one life at a time.

The Need is Urgent
  • 79% of people with criminal records are either ineligible or denied public housing
  • Private housing discrimination against formerly incarcerated individuals
  • Lack of coordinated reentry housing systems
  • Criminalization of homelessness leading to the "revolving door" effect
These statistics highlight the critical need for comprehensive reentry housing programs, policy reforms to reduce housing discrimination, and coordinated services to break the cycle between homelessness and incarceration in Oakland.
How we Help
At RH Initiative, we take a holistic approach to supporting men as they rebuild their lives after incarceration or homelessness. Our program is designed to address immediate needs while laying the groundwork for long-term success.
Safe, Clean Housing
We provide stable, shared living spaces designed to foster dignity and a sense of belonging. Our home is equipped with essential amenities, including laundry facilities, a backyard for relaxation, and a home gym to support physical wellness.
Peer Support & Mentorship
Our team offers more than just a roof—we provide lived experience and authentic guidance. Residents receive mentorship from individuals who have faced similar challenges and successfully navigated reentry.
Connections to Resources
Recognizing that housing is only the first step, we actively connect residents with vital community resources. Through partnerships with local nonprofits and agencies, we facilitate access to food assistance, healthcare, employment opportunities, and social services.
Our Goal
We strive to help men take care of themselves first—emotionally, physically, and economically—so they can build a strong foundation for a better future. By focusing on holistic growth and self-reliance, we empower our residents to reintegrate into society with confidence and purpose.
